My Fair Twenties

My fair 21 blog has come to a close but doing something for a whole year leaves a mark (and still egged on by aliee's blog and jen lancaster's book). I have decided to continue to improve myself.
I have seen the Avengers twice already.  it’s quite possible I will be seeing it a third time.
This movie is superhero perfection.
Midnight premieres with friends in costume are also perfection.
Being one of 10 people that know to stay the whole way through to see a scene  Joss had added last minute when you see it the second time, also perfection.
Go see it and then come back here so we can fan girl together.

Peace, love and letting the son shine in.  Players finished their season with a production of hair directed by my valentine and her love (ali and ryan).  I also got to see a ton of my friends be amazing and loving on stage.

They made the space work.  The show was beautiful.  I loved it.  Congrats!

Similar in style to Pride Prejudice and Zombies/Jane Slayre/Abraham Lincoln, Vampire hunter, this story of queen victory takes history and screws with it.  Queen Victoria and zombies? cool.  Let’s throw in demons and maybe a werewolf or two for fun.

So much goes on in this book that it would be hard to discuss it without spoilers so I’ll spare you, but it is worth a read if you like completely inaccurate accounts of history (fans of Troy, I’m looking at you)

Walking tours are great.  As a Jersey girl, I rarely get to embrace my touristy side in NYC.  However, when surrounded by people from California, I get to be as big of a tourist as I want.  Add food into the mix and my day is beyond made.

I found sidewalks of NY tours on living social (seriously go check them out, super nice and awesome in general!) and off we went on a West Village food adventure.

Stop #1 was Mamoun’s Falafel, which is the oldest falafel in NYC.  I had actually stumbled upon it the weekend before will ghost tour adventuring and it was delicious.  We got to try their hot sauce with their falafel this time (I had no idea they even had hot sauce) and it actually made me tear up a little it was so spicy.  It was as delicious as it was spicy though and a great start to the day.

Food stop #2 was Faiccos.  Formerly Faiccos Pork shop, now Italian specialties.  It is a tiny butcher shop and if I lived in the village I would be here all the time.

Here we tried these things that I totally forget the name of but are essentially day old rice and cheese all melted together and then fried.  We then wrapped them in a spicy salami. Amazing!  This also concluded the “fried balls” portion of the tour.

Then on to food # 3, bagels.  There is nothing better than an everything bagel from NYC.  End of story.

Now food stop #4 magnolia’s bakery, I have been to before but not the village location.  The cupcakes are great and adorable.  Also, who doesn’t love a Sex and The City landmark? (sidenote, I hear the banana pudding is to die for.  I didn’t get any, but if you’re a fan it comes highly recommended)

Food stop #5 was pizza and the tour became even better than I thought possible.  I love pizza.  It is my favorite food in the entire world.

This pizza did not disappoint.  We had a giant tour version, but I am hoping to pop back for a normal sized slice sooner rather than later.

We ended the tour with stop #6, dessert!  We went to Bruno’s.

Apparently their baker made all the desserts for a huge democratic fundraiser and people were paying 2,500 a plate so you know they had to be good.  They did not disappoint.

With the tour over, I ran the few blocks back to magnolia’s because I had seen the VanLeeuwn Gourmet ice cream truck.  I follow them on twitter but never seemed to be any where near where they were, until now.  I could not pass up this opportunity. After my mad dash back, I ordered a scoop of hazelnut/chocolate and a scoop of earl grey.  The chocolate was delicious.  The early grey tasted exactly like early grey, but it weirded me out a bit.

So many delicious decisions!

Living social is my favorite right now.  I love the adventures it throws at my feet.  Having been on 3 other ghost tours, I kind of knew what to expect.  We wandered the Village around Washington square park and NYU.

The tour itself was a great combo of Edgar allan poe facts, general NYC history and really freaky ghost stories.  We were also treated to a random musical performance by our tour guide (fun side benefit of having an actress for a tour guide).

Even if your not a ghost tour person, there are plenty of other walking tours you can jump on and I definitely suggest trying one.  I’ve really been enjoying them lately.

Standing outside at a morning show. Specifically the Today show.

Being from North Jersey, you don’t always get to indulge in the super touristy things.  It also doesn’t help that you need to wake up at 2 am ish just to get there on time.  Oi.  It was a lot of fun and being background on national tv was awesome, but I doubt I will ever do it again.

[Flash 10 is required to watch video]

This video does not really need describing, but how do I not go on about the Doctor Who Bar?!

First, I would not do justice to the evening we had if I failed to mention the show we saw.  I actually got to hang out with my two recent adventure buddies and off we headed to see the ever entertaining Sean and his improve group at the Drop Box.  I hadn’t seen any improve in a long while and it was fun, as is to be expected.  It’s the 2nd saturday of every month (right? That sounds right.) so you should go check it out next month (and every month thereafter)

After the hilarity ensued, we headed from queens to brooklyn and found ourselves at the Way Station.  I started watching Doctor who in August.  If you know me at all, you know it swiftly became my favorite show. Possibly ever.  When I heard a bar had a life size tardis door to it’s bathroom, I was super excited.

I would have been happy if that was as far as the fan excitement went.

It gets better.

The menu (which can be checked out on their site http://waystationbk.blogspot.com/) includes a sonic screwdriver for 10, 11 and river’s red setting.  Delicious!  They had a K-9!  It is a whovian dream.

This beauty was also on the wall

Perfect adventure!

oysters with caviar and sour cream

I cannot believe I actually tried this.  Essentially, it tasted like a mouth full of ocean water from the jersey shore.

Probably not going on my must order list.

Horrible Bosses

I have to say I thought, based on the trailer, that I would hate this movie.  At the urging of my friend, cori, we watched it during our last girls night in.  So glad she suggested it.

It was so wrong in all the best ways.  I really enjoyed it.  i also love that kevin spacey will play such outrageous roles and still maintains his credibility as an “artist”

Godspell at the circle in the square

To kick off Holy Week in the best way I can think of, about 25 members of the congregation of Redeemer Lutheran Church went to see Godspell in NYC.

The show itself was amazing.  I am always impressed when an ensemble can really pull off a show “in the round”.  It can be hard enough to make sure the audience has the proper sight lines when you are in proscenium.

Hunter Parish’s “Jesus” was very well done.  One of the things I really enjoyed was the joy behind his performance.  Usually Jesus as a character is soooooo serious, which I understand because the message is serious, but it was nice to see so much love and joy radiating from the character.

The entire ensemble was beyond brilliant.  They worked so well together and no one ever out shown any one else unless it was their parable to tell.

All of this was made even better by all the audience participation.  I would have been happy with just the intermission, which you need to experience to really understand, but our Pastor got pulled on stage to play Lazarus in one of the parables.  It was the highlight of my day.

Even if you aren’t extremely religious, go see the show.  If nothing else, the brilliant music and high energy performance will bring a smile to your face.
